What are cosmeceuticals and why should you use them rather than department store products?
What are cosmeceuticals and why should you use them rather than department store products?
Cosmeceutical is a fancy word for a cosmetic with pharmaceutical benefits.
Anti-aging ingredients associated with skin care and other beauty products such as retinol
a vit. A derivative, hydroxy acids, antioxidants such as vit. C, and depigmenting agents such as hydroquinone and kojiic acid, all fall under the umbrella term of cosmeceutical. Cosmeceuticals are applied topically and improve the appearance of the skin by inducing cellular changes. Most cosmeceuticals can only be purchased in a physician office, due to a higher percentage of active ingredients.
Department stores products are buffered with ingredients such as parabens, waxes, oils, fragrance and water. Cosmeceuticals may also contain some of these ingredients for stabilization, but are more likely to have a higher strength of the active ingredient.
Regardless of where you buy your skincare products, read the label and ask questions. The sales person, whether at a department store or physician’s office, should be knowledgable about the products and about skin. An aesthetician can help you choose the best products for your skin type.
